The smart home system we have designed for our apartments is an easy to use and easy to expand smart home solution that makes our homes more convenient and energy efficient at the same time. The system is an open one, the elements can be replaced and the system expanded with other smart devices as needed thanks to Z-Wave and Z-Wave plus, the most popular communications standards already used by thousands of smart home products and supported by most of the manufacturers. TouchWand, Metrodom’s smart home system consists of the following units.
Touchscreen central unit
The heart of the system is a touchscreen, which also contains the control unit. The various different sensors, switches and other elements are connected to the control unit. The control unit controls the smart-home system, the different smart-home elements are connected to it and the system is connected to the Internet through the control unit. The smart-home system is operational offline as well (with limited functionality), if you wish to remotely check or control your system from a smartphone or a computer however, or you want to modify settings or the programs, connection to the Internet is a must. The unit is mounted on the living room or ante-room wall, basic functionality can be used without a subscription, you can toggle between the different modes (day, night, out of the house, vacation) using the touchscreen. Should you wish so, you can raise or lower the temperature, raise or lower all the the window blinds in the apartment with a single touch. The ambient temperature in the apartment is shown on the display.
All radiators are equipped with smart thermostats. Using the buttons on the thermostats you can easily raise or lower the temperature, which can be checked on the digital display. The same can be done remotely, using a mobile phone or a computer. Normally however, the smart home system automatically controls the heating, individually in each room if needed, according to needs and habits of the residents. Batteries in the thermostats should be replaced every 3-5 years depending on the intensity of use. Battery charge levels can be checked via the mobile phone application.
Behind every indoor lighting switch in all our buildings to be handed over in 2018 there is a relay connected to the system. On the outside the switches look no different from ordinary light switches, and can be used in the ordinary way. In the buildings to be handed over in 2019 or later the switches will be smart, and as can be seen in the image, they will have an elegant and sleek appearance thanks to the touch-sensitive control panel. The smart home system is always aware whether a lamp is switched on and can control lighting by remotely conveyed instructions. The switches of course can also be operated manually.
The system detects the open/close status of each of the windows and balcony doors, which you can also easily check remotely. Based on the information received form these sensors the smart home system decides when to turn heating on and off. Additional programs can be linked to the sensors. Batteries in the open/close sensors should be replaced every 3-5 years depending on the intensity of use, charge levels can be monitored via the mobile phone application.
The motion sensors located in the entrance hall detect movement within the area defined in the settings. Using this sensor, the smart home system knows when someone gets home and, if needed, sends information on this to a mobile phone, working as kind of a simple alarm system. Its basic function however is to provide data that helps the smart home system control lighting, heating and other user installed devices (blinds, media center, etc.). Separate sensors can be purchased for each room if needed thus making the functions of your home fully customizable. Batteries in the motion sensors should be replaced every 3-5 years depending on the intensity of use, charge levels can be monitored via the mobile phone application.
Depending on the configuration, smart blinds or smart blind preparations (concealed case, electric outlet) may be part of the system. For detailed information on the configuration of the apartment of your choice, please consult the description. Smart blinds may be ordered in each of our buildings. Shading of the apartment is also a function that can be automated and adjusted to the needs of the residents relatively easily. The season of the year, time of the day, sunlight (illumination), weather forecast (i.e. a thunderstorm is expected) or whether someone is in the apartment are all pieces of information helping the operation of smart blinds.
