Together for Lake Tisza – A Record-Breaking Cleanup!

2025. April 24. Thursday

We are proud and delighted to have taken part in this year’s large-scale SOS Lake Tisza cleanup initiative, organized by Ljasuk Dimitry in cooperation with MVÜK Zrt. Over the course of three days, a record-breaking 10.5 tons of waste was collected from Lake Tisza and its surrounding areas!

Between April 4–6, nearly 400 volunteers—including corporate and civilian participants—joined forces to clean a one-and-a-half-kilometer stretch of shoreline known locally as “Trash Island.” Despite facing extreme weather conditions—sunshine, rain, wind, and even snow—everyone stayed committed, proving once again that determination knows no bounds.

According to Pozitivo’s official press release, the collected waste included:

  • 5,780 kg of general household waste

  • 1,500 kg of PET bottles

  • 960 kg of glass

  • 800 kg of hazardous solid waste

  • 500 liters of hazardous liquids

  • 300 kg of metal waste

  • 600 kg of bulky waste (e.g., refrigerators, tires, monitors—even a disco ball!)

The press release also highlighted that only 19% of the waste originated in Hungary, while a staggering 81% came from abroad. Unfortunately, due to its high contamination level, most of the waste cannot be recycled and is categorized as municipal waste. These materials will either be sent to landfills or used as refuse-derived fuel, which can generate electricity. Thanks to MOHU, the waste has been transported to the NHSZ waste processing facility in Tiszafüred, where recyclable materials will be salvaged. Hazardous waste is being safely removed and neutralized by Saubermacher. For more information, be sure to visit the SOS Lake Tisza website, where you’ll find insightful blog posts and educational resources about environmental protection.

At Metrodom, sustainability is more than just a principle—it’s something we actively support through real-world actions. We’re proud to have contributed to this meaningful initiative and even prouder that our colleagues joined in with enthusiasm and commitment to help protect our natural environment. Huge thanks to the organizers, all the volunteers, and supporters—together, we’ve taken another important step toward a cleaner, greener future.
